Russia's First Revolutionaries: The Decembrists ALL PARTS
μμ€ μ½λ
- κ²μμΌ 2023. 09. 22.
- In 1825, a group of disillusioned army officers launched a coup in the Russian capital, St.Petersburg. Their goal was to overthrow the Tsar, establish a constitutional government and abolish the brutal institution of serfdom. They became known by the month of the revolt - the Decembrists - a moment that nearly changed the course of Russian and world history.

We know :)
@Peter Dakin say sike now
They are good for sure..top 3 (kings and generals and historymarche)
Some points I want to mention as someone who studied Russian history:
1) the Decembrists inspired not only revolutionaries, but also writers and poets like Pushkin. Many important literature figures knew the Decembrists personally and saw their demise as a personal tragedy. Pierre Bezuknov from War and Peace has many traits of the Decembrists in his character and it was done on purpose.
2) Since the Decembrists were noblemen, they looked at the Emperor and high-ranked officials who questioned them as their comrades and were pretty naive and too honest with them answering all their questions because it was a noble thing to do and willingly giving out information later used against them.
3) The Decembrists were beloved by the local population in Siberia and they influenced the cultural development of the region. The mansions the Decembrists owned were turned into museums.
4) Some Decembrists refused to return back to St. Petersburg even when they were allowed to and they stayed in Siberia forever as they loved the place and the people and had nothing to return to back in St. Petersburg.
5) "The Decembrist's wife" is a Russian saying meaning "a brave and selfless woman who is ready to share any fate with her partner", their wives were regarded with respect and idealized.
6) The Union of Salvation (the movie) received very mixed reviews, but the majority of the vocal viewers and film critics saw it as an attempt to downplay the Decembrist's role and show their actions as senseless and the Decembrists themselves as stupid kids who rebelled out of their youthful maximalism while the "kind" Emperor was just doing his duty. The movie was released at the time of pro-liberal protests in Russia which were attended mostly by 20-30 somethings and Navalny was getting more popular among people, so showing some of the most famous Russian liberal revolutionaries in such a light at the time like that has raised many eyebrows.
Very great read! Just curious if you know if the Decemberist in Siberia ever contemplated independence from the main Russian state, or if there is some legacy of liberal rebellion or idealism in these areas from Decemberists? Not sure if there numbers were large enough to have this impact but wondered if any long term effects can be traced to their exile
@johngriffin8114 Interesting fact I discovered. The Decembrists while inspired by the United States constitution, were against slavery of African-Americans since they saw it as all too similar to Russian Serfdom and did not agree with the US Federal Model. They also aided in brining a US-style Republic with Belarus, Lithuania and Ukraine to be included in many of the former territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
I will add from BadComedian's review of the movie, that an explicit goal of the Decemberist's Movie was "showing" that the Autocrat in control wants only the best for his subjects; and all the subjects must do to gain their rights was politely appeal, shut up and suffer, and only wait.
I think it's kind of amazing that the Aristocracy was pushing for liberal reforms. Everywhere else, it seems, the aristocracy fought *against* liberal reforms. I mean, you would think the aristocracy benefited from monarchical society. Alas, my knowledge of Russia during this period (or, frankly, any period) is quite... limited.
I just wanted to watch a few minutes and ended up watching the whole documentary despite having no particular interest in the Decembrist Revolution.
This is how good your channel is. Thank you very much for all your great contents !
Similar experience here. I didn't think this was really going to set a hook but gave it a shot. I feel like I'm going to rewatch this one several times and look more deeply into some of the characters. Wow that was good!
Likewise! A documentary I didn't know I needed
"What a miserable country, they can't even hang us properly." Ouch, he definitely got one last FU in. And Sir Edward Disbrowe was right on the money in his letter to the British Foreign Secretary.
Most based quote in the whole video.
The friend of Ryleyev quoted at 15:30 - Adam Mickiewicz is considered one of the greatest Polish poets ever and a very influential figure in shaping the modern Polish identity. Born in what is now Belarus, he considered himself both Polish and Lithuanian (or more like he considered being "Lithuanian" a special kind of being Polish). He studied in the Lithuanian capital - Vilnius (Wilno, as he would call it, Vilna, as it is marked on the map in the video). He found himself in Petersburg due to internal exile deeper into the Empire; a punishment for a "horrific crime" of basically belonging to a student book club.
@sitting nut I don't understand what are you even talking about.
@Artur M. i am calling out lies in your op .
The production value on this is amazing. A particular hats off to the narration. I don't know what it is, but the way he tells this story is absolutely gripping. The part about the botched hangings almost brought a genuine tear to my eye.
I know it is good manners and common sense for the Epic History TV crew to thank their patrons and financial supporters, but really, it's we - the ones who watch all of this AAA-grade content for free time and time again as much as we want - who should be thanking them. I almost feel guilty getting this for free on their dime.
I promise, one of these days I'll do my duty and chip you a few ducats.
Me, my husband & kids LOVE these videos!!! They way u explain everything is exquisitely detailed yet comprehensive!!! Please do a series on WW2β£οΈ Thank u for all the work u put into these videos; our favorite KRclip channel!!!ππ―ππ
You guys should go over the wars of Austrian and Spanish succession! Can you go over more events of early modern history?
I love these, the best history documentaries on KRclip.
I'd love to see one on Peter the Great and special on the Suvorov campaign in Italy
Yes! It would be cool to make a video about Suvorov
Your videos on Russian history are the best I have ever seen. We are very blessed to have such exceptional quality content on this and so many other amazing events.
This was an absolutely wonderful series.
Amazing series. I swear if someone taught me history like that (or any subject for that matter) I'd not be able to get enough of school/university.
Love to see any uploads. Amazing content and I hope to see more conflicts explained !
I love the unintentional pun at the 4:00ff. mark: "The ineffectiveness and chaos of his father's rule had a-PAUL-ed him"! But my favorite line comes at the 10:38ff. mark: "You don't get things done by talking softly in French."
Thanks for the well-made documentary. What an epic failure - the decemberists! To plan everything and then on the actual planned day half the people get scared and back out and don't show up. Trubetskoy turned out to be the biggest coward of them all. π€£
I knew there was going to be betrayal but not like that. It's as bad as Guy Fawkes gaining a heart at the last minute and informing the then non Tory members to not go to parliament on Nov 5th. If he didn't do that, none would've blabbed to the King. A blast and Westminster would never be the same again.
It would be a terrible shame for any history buff viewer in KRclip not to subscribe to this awesome channel!
A terrible shame indeed
Great video. I watched it on Fourth of July weekend, which was quite fitting, given how much the Decembrists were inspired by the American Revolution. This line from Ryleyev warmed my heart: "There are no good governments in the world, except in America."
I'd say the best form of governance is a constitutional monarchy
β@Leon MorrisCanada is fine but a Republic free of conservatives is the best one
Closest is France but Le Pen is there, lurking
This is such a well done documentary. Great content! β€
A wonderful channel that deserves a thousand thousand greetings, great admiration and greater respect. Your esteemed channel is full of accurate and very useful information. Your effort is wonderful and great to be commended and appreciated. I wish you lasting success and I am writing to you with the utmost frankness and respect, and I am fully confident that you are interested in providing benefit to all without exception. The utmost respect, appreciation and pride for you, gentlemen
Such good documentaryβs, reminds me of what the History channel was when I was young. Thank you for the work you put into this.
This is such a great channel! Love all your content!
Arguably the best rendition of history Iβve ever watched.
Some of the most powerful youtube history channel. I would be very happy to watch more videos about crusades
I think this is the best history channel on KRclip and special mention to the narrator, whose voice I could o my wish to have, story-telling taken to the next level
I thank you for your great effort in providing accurate, useful and wonderful information on your esteemed channel. A thousand greetings of respect, appreciation and pride. I wish you success and progress in your wonderful work. Much respect
It's interesting how quickly we went from the peak era of dramatic television to whatever you call the era we're in now.
Seems to me one of the problems was exactly the limitation to the military, which then was pulled in 2 directions of loyalty. It should have also spread support among the regular population to have had any change of succes.
Excellent video. Big thanks for making it available to us all!
Please π₯Ί we want more I've searched through the channel again for more of these. But I've already watched them countless times. Please educate us more with these documentaries
Anxiously waiting for the next one
Same idk why I watch these videos over and over.
It's amazing to hear some them were inspired by the American Founding Fathers!
Catherine II was a big fan of them too.
β@Dizit SjetLmao no.
Thank you for a terrific history lesson.
This is such a well done documentary. Great content!
Epic History TV please do a series for the legendary commander Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeg! That would be amazing the quality of your videos are superb.
Imagine how Russia could be today had these men succeeded.
idk maybe
A: Russia will become a republic or
B: Russia will become a constitutional monarchy
Preferably B
@Joseph Pootis why?
Awful ?
@Silver Prussian they already nailed awful. A shame on the world.
Fantastic presentation, outstanding quality and good context.
Love these longer videos. keep up the good work
Outstanding documentary like always! I absolutely love how you make these, and the dedication! Please keep them coming!
This is just absolute perfection. Y'all are the best then there's all the rest..and so on.
Thank you.
Edit:I love you
Would you guys ever make a list in your descriptions of all the names of the songs you guys use? I love the music you guys use, but sometimes I have to search high and low to find some of the names. Some of which I still haven't found even when I went to Filmstro
The artwork done for this episode is stunning
great video as per usual, thank you Epic History
Thank you for making this. I learned a great deal.
A thousand greetings, great respect and admiration for your esteemed and wonderful channel, which provided accurate and useful information. I wish you lasting success. A wonderful work and a great effort that deserves pride, appreciation and pride. My utmost respect and appreciation to you
What an absolutely incredible video! The detail you put into your videos is simply exquisite. I'm not a fan of the Decembrists liberal ideals but the courage the soldiers had to stand against what they thought was wrong is inspiring nevertheless.
You just implied that you oppose the essential ideals of western democracy lol.
Excellent documentary, which filled a big gap in my knowledge. Hopefully there will shortly be a new generation of Decembrists.
Great Artwork. Hope you make an art piece of the WW2 (detailed one please).
It would be interesting if you can cover Spanish Civil Wars like Carlist Wars...It seems a best fit for this wonderful channel...Cheers and best Epic History TV
I dont know what people are watching these days but pretty sure that this documentary deserves millions of likes much better than current hollywood movies
This was literally Epic history
If the Decemberists would've waited until May I think the nicer weather would've encouraged more people to support their cause.
The Augustists
the problem wasn't the weather - it was the timid officers - intellectuals don't make the best generals
@John Eyon I just feel like they wouldn't have been timid if the weather was nice.
@Cheka - that's an example of a statement that is so foolish - that it's best to leave it hanging in the air
@John Eyon Better to leave it hanging in the warm air of summer.
I'd love a video from Epic History TV about the Caucasus War
Man these guys have to be the sorriest revolutionaries Iβve ever seen. The fact that the Bolsheviks managed to capture St.Petersburg a hundred years later with only a few hundred men shows that the 5000 trained soldiers the Decembrists had would have been more than enough to do the trick. But they gave up before they even tried!
These videos are incredible, nice work
Really fascinating introduction & informative video about Russian π·πΊ revolutionaries at 1825- 1850 ... ..ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ» such introduction obviously proven Epc history TV πΊ channel...is a great one ππ» ππ©Άπ€π€
Man this is the best history channel!!
Extremely well done retelling.
Life here in Russia is never boring, it's an endless chain of wars, revolutions, ect
Even under average students perform well in their history subject when they accidentally met a legend named"Epic history"
Legends says some even ask for Epic math,Epic science itself"
Beautifully made!
Before the December uprising, there were several peasant uprisings on the Senate Square: for two hundred years. The largest are the revolts of Bulavin, Razin, Pugachev. When the rebels took the cities.
Alternative history is fascinating to me, imagine the world if the Decembristβs won?
That's just the point, they were rebelling against something but had no viable alternative. Their "win" would have led to years of civil war..
@David DirrΓ©-Moire or, they could have established a Federal Republic and reformed Russia in to a western democracy with liberal ideas. In WW1 they would have been Neutral like the USA and as such Germany would have had full focus on the west leading to probably a French and British defeat. I am not sure what would have to France probably loss of territory to some extent with a larger Germany but Hitler would not be able to rise to power so WW1 is as far as I can go. The one long lasting outcome is that the USA and Russia would be allies and without the rise of the Soviet Union perhaps China would be still under Emperor rule or face their own democratic revolution.
It's baffling just how weak those in charge of the revolution were, particularly in the North
I canβt understand how anyone would give up before even trying. After putting in so much time and effort for this and thenβ¦ they give up and accept defeat and possible execution for treason?!? Madness.
@senzoo
Iβm amazed that they gathered their soldiers only to abandon them to artillery fire.
u think u would've done a better job?
The worst part that all of them faced the trial anyway.
Well, if you know you and your troops are a dead men then it's you're duty to dare to do what you've have planned.
@Master Safari
I think thatβs right. Those soldiers were loyal to them and died for their cause, and that death was in vain for their cowardice/poor planning.
I dont remember the name of the movie, but it was about the decembrists. Watching the scene where the soldiers formation is gettimg shredded by grapeshot was horrifying.
Union of Salvation
@Jan Ε tefaniΔ thanks my dude
My only complaint is that this wasn't uploaded on December 14. That would have been so much cooler!
Well Time for a rewatch! Thanks for your work EHTV!
So unexpected and facsinating knowing that Russia had these young aristrocats who looked up to the US and wanted change and freedom not just for themselves and other like them, but also for everyone!
Masterpiece, as usual
π i thought this was Part two of Napoleon's Italian campaign, it's okay thank you so much Epic history tv π₯°π₯°π₯°
Love this video. Amazing work.
Loved this! So interesting!
Could you guys do a history about the space shuttles?
you posted this video one day too late my man, last sunday i watched it with my entire family in our tv and i had to get up to go the second video. It was really enjoyable nevertheless!
Wow. Imagine if Russia became a US-Style federal republic. Idk if my little heart could handle it
Exelent video, the only thing that could be added would be a more in depth exploration of ideology of both sides
While I watching this documentary, I had an urge of knowing the release date of the videoβ¦I started laughing, I guess everyone is doing their part, instigating a revolution in Russia
Serfdom was abolished in France in 1779 by Louis XVI, a decade before the revolution :)
Crazy how this echos through time, couldnβt be more truer today in Russia.
Please do one on the 1905 revolution.
Despite their failure, these where great men.
The Russian tsars were themselves hostages of the political system created under Alexei Mikhailovich. In such a vast country, you cannot free tens of millions of people without consequences, which can be destructive for the whole country, not only for the dynasty. Although serfdom did not concern the whole of Russia, but for the most part its central region. This was confirmed by Stolypin's fleeting reform, which freed millions of peasants, but they had nowhere to go because there was not enough work for everyone. But it was not fully completed due to the assassination of Stolypin, World War 1 and the revolution. Although many do not understand that the serfs and landlords in Russia were often close to each other and this in the vast majority of cases was not a mockery as sadistic noblewoman Morozova. On the contrary, most of the tragic cases described by Russian classics were not serfs and more often happened in the city, not in the countryside. Where poor people cut off from the earth were often alone and were not needed by anyone, the same as in the British classics where the poor, mostly workers, eked out a miserable existence. But in the villages people lived in better conditions and in most cases were not left to the mercy of fate, moreover, they were often met halfway in difficult situations, they were given money and livestock as a loan. Many did not want to leave the landowners. At that time, the landowners in the village were mostly Orthodox Christians and had to take care of their people. And here one can argue who lived worse than the London, St. Petersburg worker or serf in the Bryansk province. And also who was more cruel London or St. Petersburg manufacturer or Orthodox Chritian Russian landowner. Of course, a London or St. Petersburg worker sounds more progressive than a serf, but all the same, in Russia there should be a gradual evolution of the political system, and not a revolution. Liberals in Russia always have a disastrous contrast for them in the many beautiful small and large towns in Europe compared to the large dull (as it seems to them) plains with a small number of cities in the expanses of patriarchal Russia. They do not understand the beauty of Russia and its integrity and self - identity . They always want to make Europe out of Russia, but Russia is neither Europe nor Asia, and never will be. Russia is a separate project and a separate civilization, where not only Russians but also hundreds of other peoples live, the main goal of which, having huge resources, to build their own more just society than now, their civilization, not to quarrel with each other, but to complement each other without any revolutions, but only due to evolutions in all spheres. Also interesting is the fact that the British, both at that time and after 100 years and now, have always longed for a revolution in Russia, but not in Britain. But this will not happen again because the Russians already have 2 powerful vaccines from the overthrow of the 1917 and 1991 regime. This will not happen again no matter how much the West would like it.
Was literally listening to Revolutions right now, great timing
25:24 Anyone else notice that this guy shoots everyone EXCEPT the Emperor? The guy he was SUPPOSED to shoot in the first place!?
35:30 - 35:48 is pure comedy
Itβs better to fail boldly than suffer safely. After all, we still remember him after 200 years.
Just watched "Union of Salvation" (Soyuz Spaseniya) thanks to this video. Fantastic movie.
That's the most Russian response to a botched executed ever @ 46:25.
How different history might've been had the Decemberists succeeded: e.g., if Tsar Nicholas I had never ruled, there might've been NO CRIMEAN WAR (or if such a war did occur, perhaps a modernized Russia would've WON that war). Above all, perhaps with a modern, limited (constitutional) monarchy--or maybe even an American-style republic--arising in 1825 or 1826 in Russia, maybe COMMUNISM NEVER would've prevailed in Russia; it's incalculable how much that would've changed the 20th century!
How is this not priority in history lessons after modern world events?
This was absolutely riveting
Great piece, thank you.
Recently watched the film Nicholas and Alexandra, on the last years of their reign. He was just unwilling to be anything other than an autocrat!
I always enjoy revolutions that just make things worse.
11:15 this to me seems it would bring lots of support to the Decembrists.
When the executioner attempted to hang the five men, three of them, Muravyov-Apostol, Kakhovsky, and Ryleyev, dropped through the trapdoor only to have the rope around their necks break. Ryleyev supposedly told the crowd watching the execution that Russia was an "unhappy country, where they don't even know how to hang you." The Tsar decided to prove otherwise, and simply ordered more rope, and the execution was carried out.
There had been no executions in Russia for 50 years.
In contrast to the constitutional monarchy in Great Britain in the thousands or in the French Republic in the tens of thousands.
@ΠΠΈΠΊΠΎΠ»Π°ΠΉ Sorry, this was not my point. My point was that if Ryleyev did not badmouth his country he might survived.
I wish they were teaching history that way back in school
Editor really loves that flame transition.
16:29 Without a superior ideal, liberty breeds anarchy
Could you please make a video on the Russian wild west, the Russian Far east
