Napoleon in Italy Part 1: Battle of Lodi
์์ค ์ฝ๋
- ๊ฒ์์ผ 2022. 12. 01.
- In 1796, at the height of the Revolutionary Wars, Napoleon Bonaparte took command of French forces in northern Italy. He was just 26 years old and had never commanded an army before. Within weeks, he had turned his ragged, demoralised troops into a ferocious fighting force, defeating the Austrians and knocking Piedmont out of the war. With success, Napoleon began to believe it was his destiny to shape the fate of nations. In this series, we follow Napoleon's first glorious campaign step by step.

I'm pleading with epic TV to prepare series on Samori Toure, the Franco -Madinka wars.... also the thirty years wars of Europe.
Thank you so much for making my day better. I was desperately waiting for this one since months. Kudos to you and your whole team ๐
it was so good pls never leave the napoleonic this is just the best long live epic history!๐
I really enjoyed it friend. Keep going your excellent work.
Excited to see PMF Productions getting in on the collab!
I love how Napoleon was always underestimated by everyone yet managed to achieve incredible feats
Ahah I sure loved your own video about Napoleon, maybe you will some more about him or the french army ^^
Kutuzov didn't,and still suffered at Austerlitz
Still, hotheads got their position in Alexander's army to strike preemptively while holding a very advantageous position.I personally thinks that Kutuzov must fortify that height better, into a grand fortress perhaps built by palisades and wooden stuff
@Viแปt Nguyแป n Hoร ng that would have taken too long and once Marshall Mortier Corp caught up, Kutuzov would have been outnumbered and could have encircled.
@Max Anderson At least some basic fortifications like sandbags.Napoleon spent the whole day studying his enemy's positions.Far as I know, fortifying a height with almost 100000 troops is entirely possible
@Viแปt Nguyแป n Hoร ng Kutuzov had to attack, he couldn't defend on the hill, once outnumbered, he could have outflanked and cut off. And if he built the kind of defenses like you said the Napoleon attack would have been even more deadly since, troops of the 4th column would have been trapped between the French and their own defense when they needed to retreat.
I have seen a lot of Napoleon content and documentaries over the years. I have ready many books about him. Nothing and no one even comes close to how well-made, informative, concise, accurate, and interesting EHTV's series on Napoleon is. This channel is the gold standard for Napoleon content.
If you have not already read it, I strongly recommend "Napoleon The Great" by Andrew Roberts. It is a very interesting, detailed and informative biography of Napoleon's life and campaigns.
The audio book version is also very well read (how I listened to it while at the gym).
Really? Because "The little corporal" is not accurate.
โ@Imanol Durham how so?
Best channel on You Tube
I doubt accurate.. especially un the waterloo and wagram videos
Massรฉna really was one of the great French looters of the era and it really hurt his campaigns half the time. A huge part of the blame for inciting so many Spaniards to rebel falls completely on him. A wizard on the battlefield, but an absolute tool when it came to ensuring compliance from the local population and actually ruling them
se souvenir du Talent de Massรฉna..great
He objectively should've been used areas where that action was necessary, not in a place where you're trying to earn hearts and minds.
@RishiI agree 100%
Massena and Augereau were from poor, impoverished backgrounds, not gifted with Kingdoms like Murat or Joseph to rule as their own. This doesnโt exactly excuse the fact they were extortionists to the max, but it goes a long way to explaining their behavior. Greed is a hard vice to ignore, especially when you can satisfy that vice with the barrel of a musket or point of a saber.
I was wondering (and hoping for) whether you plan to cover Napoleon in Intaly (and probably in Egypt as well) after making those absolutely incredible videos about his 1805-14 campanings. Aaaaand, here it comes!! THANKS!!
Egyptian campaign would really be awesome.
YES !!!!
he already covered the egyptian campaign i think
@cowbyhe didnโt
@cowby No this channel hasn't
Itโs crazy how the Italian campaign was essentially the dream team of Napoleonโs greatest military minds even before he became Emperor.
Yet when Napoleon's created the first eighteen Marshals of the Empire in 1804, the choices were of equal number (nine) of the Army of the Moselle and Rhine and the Army of Italy. It seems quite obvious or that despite the Army of Italy playing the bigger role in the victory over the First Coalition, Napoleon didn't want one army to feel overshadowed by the other army and to maintain loyalty of his new empire.
Canโt tell you how happy I am to see this series come back, and how fitting it is to pick it up with Napoleonโs rise to fame. I am really looking forward to this series as I think his early campaigns in Italy and Egypt are sometimes overlooked. Magnifique, mon ami!
The only place on the internet where you can openly admire Napoleon
Who is going to prevent you from it
There are many many many admirers of Napoleon. Even if he was not a perfect man his track record is enormous
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle describes him the best: โHe was a wonderful man - perhaps the most wonderful man who ever lived. What strikes me is the lack of finality in his character. When you make up your mind that he is a complete villain, you come on some noble trait, and then your admiration of this is lost in some act of incredible meanness.โ
@Avi A r/historymemes
And Tumblr
I am a medical student and I have to keep count of every minute yet I couldn't resist the urge to finish it in one go..
This is by far the best history channel I have ever come across. All of the 27:26 minutes was worth it.
Keep up the great work and ofcourse waiting for the next part.
Are you saying Napoleon is the Gregory House of warfare?
Cringe
Iโm doing rotations rn. Itโs pretty chill
Finally I met an indian who watches these series
@RS which state?
Been waiting years for more Napoleon content from Epic History. You guys never disappoint!
Thank you for this. Your series on Napoleon has entertained my friends, family and I for many hours. Bit by bit you've created an absolute monster of a documentary of Napoleon's military career, bringing alive a period of history passed over by many these days.
You know these guys are not kidding when Murat's name is pronounced correctly!
Keep up the good work!
By the way, I don't know if you've already done it but I need a video on the 2nd Italian campaign! ๐ฅบ
The legendary series is back! thanks EHTV!
To my oponent: I apologise for my mistake, true,Napoleon was fighting the first Reich in Italy. But it it true aswell he was against the existing Reich that he dismantled in 1806. My mistake is due to the fact that I am cut from my books for more than 10 years and rely on memories only. So, I am right in the sens of absolute truth. I do my best with what I have at my disposal, Thank you
Cringe
@M K nah it isn't
Amen
Easily my favourite video of the channel thus far...and there's some fierce competition! Excellent work, Toby and PMF Productions, with a fantastic start to the series. The new style for the Revolutionary Wars looks brilliant and helps to distinguish from the later Empire series. The overall quality and cinematic value the whole documentary had was truly amazing.Thank you for the opportunity and I am immensely grateful. Can't wait for part 2!
This new series about Napoleon made my day!
Congratulations to PMF Productions for having his dreams collabing with Epic History realized. It's one hell of a collaboration! Good job ๐
Oh man. I'm so glad PMF productions got this recognition, I saw his whole napoleon in italy series which he did as a tribute to your napoleon series and it's great. Great video as always from you guys too.
Nobody does Napoleon as well as you guys, I love that this series is back!
"Steingel, Desaix, Massena! Victory will be gained; go, hurry, attack; they are ours!" One of Napoleon's last words on Saint Helena. You can see what a big impression the first victories made on him.
Update: I made a mistake, it wasnt his last words, he said that 3 days before his death. But still interesting
Hey, I was wondering if you could provide where you got that info as I would like to know more.
โAccording to historian George Moir Bussey, writing in 1840, on May 2nd, 1821, just three days before Napoleon's death and while he was in a state of fever:
"The Emperor spoke of nothing but France, of his son, and of his ancient comrades. 'Steingel, Desaix, Massena!' he cried, 'Ah! the victory will be gained! hasten, urge the charge! they are ours!' He leaped from the bed; but his strength failed him, and his attendants with the gentlest care replaced him."
Not on the deathbed, but yea, in agonising fever.
im not crying, youre crying
@ะฑัััะปะบะฐ ะบัะผััะฐthat's very interesting but it was 3 days before he died so it wasn't his last words. I heard his last words were France ,army ,chief of army and Josephine.
@Kenneth KnoppikโOne of his last wordsโ read that again
It is fascinating seeing the origin stories of these men that would eventually become the masters of France (Napoleon himself, Suchet, Lannes, etc). These are such fantastic videos.
Epic History TV at their finest. Thank you, and to PMF Productions, for bringing this subject to a wider audience. And it drops on the anniversary of Austerlitz, too.
Quite auspicious.
is great to see PMF production in colaboration with epic history TV, great quality of both... congratulations, working together is a great concentration of force... this series is getting even better.
its a good thing so they are the deserving collaboration after historymarche
ABOVE ALL, INDOMITABLE SELF BELIEF. Truer words have never defined such a legend better than this. If all of us had that kind of courage, our lives would be unconquerable and we could achieve anything we set our minds to. What an extraordinary video. Award winning work with an award winning voice!
Your Napoleon series is truly a work of art. I hope that one day when you finish, you will create a complete story of the whole era of this man.
Each time you mentioned Berthier, Massรฉna,Lannes, Marmont, Suchet, Augereau,... I was like "I know that guy!"
There's a rifle called Berthier
@Artin Rahidehever heard of 12 pounder Napoleons?
Haha yea itโs like a marvel cameo
"Terror Belli. Decus Pacis." Seeing the names of Napoleon's future marshals feels like meeting your old buddies that you've been through so much with.
25:10 ..just a litle precision. Napoleon got his nickname " le petit caporal" from troups because caporals were elected by his own soldiers unit in the new french republic ; meaning Napoleon deserved to lead them.
Napoleon Endgame - France 1814:
"The next day, at the Battle of Monteraeu, the French droved the Allied Wurttemberg corps back across the river with 30% losses.
According to some accounts, the Emperor sited the French cannon himself, as he had at Lodi, 18 years before."
Chills literal chills.
"Napoleon had the Allies on the run, but for how long?"
Itโs so cool watching this after watching the 3 hour Napoleon Marshallโs video and recognising some of the names and the greatness theyโll go onto achieve. Murat is still such a favourite, hilarious boyyo with the respect of the Cossacks. Canโt even write such an entertaining story just had to happen
Ooorah Murat !
He was a Captain of Artillery during his first victory and the winning strategy of maneuvers to force the British in the Battle of Toulon to retreat by Sea. His knowledge of Using Terrain and Artillery to support his Infantry attacks made him a genius in the eyes of his enemies. His organization of his Army into 20-30k man self sufficient Corps, made his Army extremely dangerous as being able to change directions and attack quickly.
His Corps , were self sustaining Units and had their own Artillery, Calvary , Infantry, Engineers, Supply/Commissary Units and Medical Personnel.
A masterpiece! No other words can describe this.
Napoleon was a legend
You've gotta respect EHTV for getting their Napoleon videos sponsored by a genuine Napoleonic souvenirs shop and not some bs scam like Established Titles.
This video was just EPIC, I love the fact that you are showing Napoleon since his beginnings, on detail. I hope we may get to know more about the early stages of Napoleon's military career due to your efforts! THANKS! hope to see more!
Incredible times, incredible documentary series, well done everyone who participated in this wonderful production. ๐ซ๐ท๐
Unbelievable quality and detail. EHTV never disappoints. Joined the channel when it had less than 200k subscribers. Heartening to see the community is well over 1 million now and still growing.
This is what this channel really thrives on. When this type of content is on display, it is one of the best war and history channels on youtube.
INCREDIBLE HOW FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY ARMIES MANAGED THEIR VICTORY OVER POWERFUL ENEMIES. Thanks for this video from Spain.
contra Espaรฑa tambien
The greatest history teacher returns !
I am so excited for this one , this what I should have been taught in high school regarding Napoleon instead of a dumb 2 min summary
My book just says "campaign of Italy" ๐
Even Oversimplified's narration of this part of Napoleon's campaign was arguably more detailed than what is taught in schools.
Why would you need to learn it in school?
Why would you need to learn this in school? Itโs interesting, yes, but precise knowledge of napoleonโs troop movements is probably completely irrelevant to your life. Teaching things like the effects of the French Revolution socially and politically are much more important.
@Robert W Napoleon and French revolution is an important period of history , where the liberal ideas of today began. It deserves more attention , like the only thing I can recall learning of the revolution from school is the chopping of heads.
De loin la meilleure sรฉrie de vidรฉos sur le sujet. Heureusement que les anglophones sont lร !
Congratulations Epic History TV. Never disappoint to make this channel more interested. I'm fan of Napoleon. His story make me more ambitious to be like him.
Guys you always do so wonderful, it is inspirational to see you the epic history team do so well in production. Obviously the content speaks for itself. Nepoleon is a true legend.
Even better than expected โค๏ธ Assuming this series does well (there's no reason why it shouldn't), would EH consider doing an Egyptian Campaign series?
Edit, congrats on a million views on this episode!
I liked learning about WW2, but learning about Napoleon is more than enough to crave my love for history.
Just to hear the familiar Napoleonic names in that Epic voice, is pure, sweet nostalgia. Thank you for this, truly. I'm so glad I stayed up to catch the premiere!
Fantastic video, the effort that goes into these videos is astounding. Vive Epic History TV โ
This is awesome! Have been toying with the idea of writing a Napoleonic historical fiction from the POV of a French soldier (bit like Sharpe and Hornblower do for the British Army and Navy respectively) and was going to start the events off with the Italian campaign - think I had Montenotte as the first battle the protagonist would fight at. When I was researching, was crazy to see how comparatively small these battles were (numbers wise) to the latter Napoleonic wars that were to come.
The long awaited "prequel"! Hope to see a Napoleon in Egypt soon!
After rewatching the Napoleonic series so many times, the legendary series is back ๐ฅน
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been sculpting and 3D printing Napoleonic era miniatures specifically for the Italian campaign - delighted EHTV followed through on its annoucements and invested in producing this series.
Your channel's production values are seminal - look forward to following the series - great work EHTV!
As an Italian I have to thank Napoleon for awakening the national consciousness of my country during this first campaign and for creating a first independent Italian nation state.
We Italians still love him as our first President of the Italian Republic and as King of Italy.
Vive l'Empereur ! ๐ฎ๐น โค๏ธ ๐จ๐ต
Viva l'imperatore!
Viva Napoleone Bonaparte!
Ah vedo che ce ne sono di italiani :)
Technically the first King of Italy was Odoacer :)
@G S I said first President of the Italian Republic. I know he wasn't the first to hold the title of King of Italy.
@Elias bonafe' caso raro lol
Can not wait to binge the rest of this series!!! I would love to know more about what I think is Napoleonโs greatest campaign, due to the reasons stated at the end of the episode
Para mi, este canal tiene los mejores documentales de las campaรฑas napoleรณnicas que he visto en mi vida. Gracias por poner los subtรญtulos en espaรฑol para poder disfrutarlas, sigan subiendo mas por favor, saludos.
Been waiting for this from your team. The Italian campaign made Napoleon. And you presented it as beautifully as his maneuvers.
This video is wonderful. Fantastic job. Iโm really excited to see the Egypt campaigns, hopefully youโll go into the Battle of the Nile in detail, I thought your trafalgar episode was terrific
This was incredible. When I think you guys can't outdo yourselves you do. I was gripped from beginning to end.
Thank you so much for this! I watched every video of Napoleon series many times. And today we will see The Little Corporal sighted the French cannon himself, as he will do at Montereau, 18 years after.
W
Yes! About time you covered this, a brilliant series of campaigns in which he was routinely heavily outnumbered yet won. Cheers!
Awesome to see Epic History TV collaborating with PMF Productions. This video was stellar which is the quality that I have become accustomed to. Truly amazing work from both channels and I cannot wait for future content.
Great video as usual and beautiful pictures too.
Just a word about the Directory. At first, It was not seen as being led by incompetent and corrupted men, especially Lazare Carnot who was nicknamed The Organizer of the Victory. As a member of the Public Safety Committee during the Convention, he profoundly reorganized the French army and made it to be able to fight against the First Coalition and the civil war in Vendรฉe.
I think that the Directory has been discredited with its Coup d'Etat of 18th Fructidor when it eliminated the royalist political opposition. And threatened of being arrested and deported, Carnot had to run away...
there's a Place Carnot in my city
The pace of this video is much faster than I expected, you can find more details in PMF's series if I remember correctly. I would have liked more coverage on Massena too. This and future Italian campaigns were some of his finest moments. "His military career is equaled by few commanders in European history." from his wikipedia page
Thanks for another great video nevertheless. It was exciting and interesting as usual and time flew by.
Napoleon Bonaparte is my favorite and inspirational character. What a career he s had. One of the best commanders the world ever had. Over sixty battles just lost only 8 or so battles. One of the best tactians ever. Bold and always courageous leader who gave a code and also a law which has his name and still used by the world. EHTV thanks for creating these videos. Thnks for all your hard work and dedication also all the members and crew of ehtv . One of the most thrilling episodes ever. After watching these videos i used to search all these things and now had a great knowledge about Napoleonic era. Thnks also for it EHTV. Also after you showed some osprey books i started to read them . They are brilliant books. A huge fan of you from Sri Lanka โค๏ธ๐ฅ.love you guys. Also expecting more great Napoleonic content from ya channel. Thanks again for providing with great knowledge and information. ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ
I am so glad PMF productions got recognition they were doing a series on the Italian campaign that I thought was awesome
Beautiful work, a perfect delivery! Thank you once more Epic History TV for this brilliant documentary!
Well done! Another great episode on Napoleonโs military career๐
Love the narrator's voice for these videos. He does an excellent work.
Brilliant video, very much happy to see more of Napoleon being covered and looking forward to more!
Edit: To upload the documentary on coronation and Austerlitz day is brilliant :)
... It's " Epically Brilliant " ... โ๏ธ ๐
Also the day he became emperor of the french in 1804
@The Suplex Guy Yes indeed
Was this ever actually a holiday? As huge as Austerlitz was, I would expect Napoleonโs Coronation to have been celebrated on 2 Dec.
Austerlitz has received a lot of attention but the Italian campaign still has a lot of terrain to cover. Austerlitz is Napoleon's masterpiece, I am among those who wish to know more about his early years in command. :)
This is far and a way the best historical series on Napoleon. Pure perfection!
I love this channel's video about Napoleon, and this one was no exception. It's because of this video I now know the real reason why Napoleon why nicknamed "Le Petit Corporal." Keep up the great work, Epic History TV!
Iโve seriously been waiting all week for this! Thank you Epic History for your work on these videos ๐๐ป
Love you channel so much I don't think there is a better history channel on KRclip. Please keep up the great work!! ๐
I really love these stories about Napoleon. Probably the best part of his life is putting the crown on himself.
Can not tell how happy I am. The Napoleon series is back!!!
Can't wait to see episode 2 .wonderful series. Thank you epichistory tv. You guys are amazing and my fav history channel is you. โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
This is an absolutely thrilling series. Glad to see it back.
I LOVE how you guys released this on December 2nd... the day of coronation... the day of Austerlitz.... VIVE L'EMPEREUR! VIVE EPIC HISTORY!
Thank you for collaborating with PMF Productions! That channel was always a big fan of Epic History, so it probably made his day
I can vouch for Napoleon Souvenirs, I bought 2 blades, l'aigle in bronze, a Napoleon Bust, a flintlock replica and a replica of Jean Lannes Marรฉchal Baton. Great stuff, quite excited to get my hands on the 90x90cm flag of the Imperial Guard. Making for a really nice display.
Please don't hurt yourself. I assume the blade is sharp.
@TheDaggz ๐ค๐ ๐๐คฃ
Good timing ! Today is the birthday of Napoleon's coronation and of his victory at Austerlitz ! Can't wait for the video, that is going to be very epic !
Thank you so much for doing such a great job !
As always, the soundtracks, visuals and scripts couldn't be better! Keep up the great work! :D
Yes! The Napoleonic series has always been my favorite, epic history with the artwork, sounds, noises of the era make it come alive in a beautiful way
Thank you so much Epic History TV! Your Napoleon series is my absolute favorite and I've been chomping at the bit waiting for this.
Beautiful artwork by Keith Rocco really brings these scenes to life. I'd love to see you all use more of his work in the future.
The only place on the internet where you can openly admire Napoleon. The legendary series is back! thanks EHTV!.
Glad to see this channel is going to cover Napoleonโs conquests during the War of the First Coalition.
Definitely a great video! I would love to have seen some more detail about battles and movements than what was shown as a summary. Also, if you guys can incorporate new intense music to the series that would make it so much more engaging and fresh! Thank you!
Napoleonโs quotes/speeches in this video is so powerful and effective that I had rewatched this 10 times
This is brilliant and it adds more knowledge of Napoleon than what I know now since high school. Napoleon Bonaparte has been one of my favorite generals since high school is tactics and his courage in his early days were magnificent. No wonder he was an influence in the American Civil War.
Robert E Lee used Napolean's tactics of splitting his army a lot of the time with good results. As one of Lee's General's put it "Get there fastest with the mostest".
Loved this, absolutely need more Napoleonic videos here!
The content and commentary are perfect. The best KRclip history channel ever !
This is what I have been waiting for, I am so glad Epic History TV makes eductional videos in such detail and with such high quality!
This was a great video. It showed Napoleon in a brilliant light. And it showed how his enemies reacted. Can't wait for the next video.
Just brilliant. I still can't believe quality of this caliber is free. Thank you for bringing this history to life.
What I appreciate the most about Epic History TV is the care about the correct pronounciation of placenames, surnames, and so on. Usually, documentaries just wing it, butchering everything. Aside a slight slip on "Cosseria", which is pronounced "Kos-seh-rya" and not "Kos-seh-REE-ah", it was all perfect here as well. Thank you for respecting languages and cultures!
Excelent as always. There is no better history channel like you, congratulations!
Very happy to see Epic History is filling in the missing parts of the Napoleonic era. Great episode, looking out for more!
Love how all the animations and video work has evolved over the years. Looking crisp!
Amazing show as usual, would had been nice to mention than when the Austrians attacked at the start of the campaign, Napoleon initially panicked as the thought the austrians had guessed his plans and had to quickly organize the army to start the offensive ahead of schedule
Youre Napoleon content is second to none. Words cant describe my excitement for more Napoleon videos from your team. Video was excellent.
Man, almost every video of Epic history give me goosebumps, outstanding quality.
Oh, there has been a long wait to finally see this high-quality, inspiring video about The Emperor's campaigns. Vive l'Epic History TV!!!
