1917: Russia's Two Revolutions

- Everything you need to know about the Russian Revolution in 13 minutes.
This video covers all the major events of Russia's TWO revolutions of 1917- the February Revolution that ended Tsarist rule in Russia, and the October Revolution, that brought the Bolsheviks to power. We explain the causes of Tsar Nicholas II's growing unpopularity - the role of the mysterious Siberian mystic Rasputin, Russia's disastrous involvement in World War One, and the events on the streets of Petrograd that led to the Tsar's abdication. That summer Russia lurched from crisis to crisis, with a Provisional Government that faced riots (the July Days), military revolt (the Kornilov Affair), economic chaos, and constantly dwindling support. Socialist Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky, once hailed as Russia's great hope, was unable to restore order, or, in October, prevent the Bolsheviks from launching a coup, organised by Leon Trotsky and led by Vladimir Lenin, that overthrew the Provisional Government and brought the Bolsheviks to power. A brutal civil war followed, leading to the death of more than 10 million Russians - amongst them Tsar Nicholas II and his family, executed by Bolsheviks at Yekaterinburg in July 1918. From the wreckage emerged the Soviet Union, formed in 1922, and destined to be one of the 20th century's superpowers.

Hello. This is a re-edited version of a video I first released for the centenary of the Russian Revolution in 2017. Unfortunately KRclip demonetized and age-restricted the original video, probably because of a slightly grim photo of Rasputin after he'd been fished out of the river. This re-edited version omits that photograph, and includes a few small corrections. Please note that all dates in the video are 'Old Style' (OS), meaning they use the Julian Calendar (the one used in Russia at the time, but not in the rest of Europe.) To calculate New Style dates (NS), add 13 days. This video is intended as a very brief overview of the 1917 revolutions. My own major criticism of it six years later, is that the introduction is VERY brief, and fails to mention the fast-paced industrialisation that was going on in Russia (largely thanks to French loans) in the late 19th / early 20th century. You can find out a bit more about that in our History of Russia video krclip.com/video/w0Wmc8C0Eq0/비디오.html Despite that caveat, I hope you enjoy the video!
I see
Oh come on, who doesn't wanna see a icy dead Russian wizard?
French watching this : Monarchy pushed in a revolution having first a national assembly, then a war against entire Europe, hungry citizens and a charismatic chief gaining power. "Seems familiar 😅"
@Gilles Abou Bechara I think it's called rigamortis...
You guys should do a Part 6 to the Russian History Series! Covering the Russian Civil War to the Present. As someone who has parents that came from the Soviet Union I would love to know more about its history. Keep up the good work!
Only problem with covering stuff like the soviet union and other states/fog related subjects is that there is so much information missing unfortunately that might never see the light of day.
Yes! Cover the Soviet Union period of Russia!
@Gokke In spite of a great deal of suppression, one can get a pretty clear picture of most Soviet history.
@DMC12Gauge depends what your definition of a clear picture is ;)
But yes in an overall context its atleast easier, but there are so many sources that has shown to be wrong and kgb documents that has changed alot of assumptions just a few years back.
No one wants to see that. We want to see WW2
For some reason, I can never get enough of the Russian Revolution. It's endlessly fascinating, and terrifying. Great work on this one! One of the best videos I've ever watched on the subject.
There are such essential details. It should be revealed. Keep studying it will bring much more knowledge about this significant era and also about "western" moves to try to overwhelm Russia.
indeed up there with chinas revolution
Russia will be free🙏🏼🤍💙🤍
Both Russia and China's revolutions have the same tribe operating behind the scenes.
This channel truly never fail to impress me, the research, the quality, this is truly one of the best history channels on KRclip
Charles Nove also just has a great voice for this sort of thing. Calming yet smart sounding. I do agree with you though, their diligence is of course incredibly important!
He make a mistake he said the ussr was form in 1922 after hitler was defeted
@Arron Ashmead maybe he meant Nicholas
@Arron Ashmead From the video: "The Soviet Union, created in 1922, emerged as a world super power following the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two." That is an absolutely correct statement. You simply misinterpreted it. He wasn't trying to say that Hitler was defeated in 1922.🤪
@Balclava Ⲙⲁⲣⲕⲟⲥ Ⲓⲱⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ No, the statement from the video was correct. Please see my reply to the other user above.👍
@Epic History TV disponibilize legendas em Português-Brazil para que todos de nosso continente possa aprender com seus vídeos POR FAVOR
When the military has joined the anti-government protests I think your only option is to pretty much just give up the ghost. When a government no longer holds a monopoly on violence then the only purpose of that former government is to step down before things fracture into bloodletting.
It really is true, when you have the people and the milltary you have everything, because everything you don't have you can just take.
True but you gotta give some credit to Nicholas 2. I cant think of many emporers/tsars that abdicated. IDK youve got to be a big man to do it.
"just give up the ghost"
... yup... lookit ukraine 2014...
i think its time to quit guys, gtfo
@TheFieldEmperor in Jilin opinion
The content is beyond magnificent, the work you put is amazing and highly appreciated. I would give all my budget for a full series on the Eastern Roman Empire. Also, where can I find the music you use?
No I'm not jealous at how good of a history channel Epic History TV is or anything...
Don't beg for attention.
@otteN Whatever. It worked. I am a sucker for history channels. Maybe some historians also like art.
you will never be as good as him. face realiy
@Art by Jeremy Maya Robinson Yawn.
@D Mac What do you think you are accomplishing by being rude to random people on the internet?
More helpful that 3 hours of my history lectures
Didn’t know all of this occurred after the take over of the Soviet Union. Have only read about the Czars like Alexander the last Great Czar of Russia, Peter the Great and Nichols and Alexandrine. I am so glad you are putting this on this on this channel.
You really set the standard for history videos.
Excellent work man. Make videos for the Russian civil, the eastern front of ww2 and the Soviet Union during the cold war please. They're basic parts of Russia's history too.
just found your channel and im binging through all your stuff while im at work! i love history keep up the good work!
Wow. What story telling. By far one of the best historical channels on KRclip. Period.
It would be interesting a series regarding all the military campaigns of Russia and the soviets commanded by General Trotsky: The civil war, St Peesburg's coup, Poland's invasion, etc.
Trotsky wasnt a general, in fact he was the minister of war.
Epic History TV is an oasis of excellence in the cesspool of KRclip.
Idk KRclip is pretty awesome man.
@Evan H ::
Whatever the faults of YT, it is a great way to communicate with people from all over the World ; to learn about other cultures ; other people ; other opinions ; to intelligently have an exchange of ideas ... yeah, there are bad & nefarious people on YT ... but, overall ...
there hasn't been anything like YT in History !
I agree with your assessment 100% !
truer words have never been spoken!!
Epic History is thee history channel. It should in fact take that name and wipe away the sorry excuse that currently has that name.
Amazing comment. Pure truth.
This is better than most TV documentaries. Excellent work.
This channel is trully amazing and makes history more simple to learn 👍
History just history and nothing but history.
You’ve got to love it
It's a truly great video, thank you very much. However, I'd like to make some comments on Polish subtitles:
5:27 - "played into the hands" should be translated as "stała się wodą na młyn" instead of "trafiła w ręce"
11:26 - "executed them all" - in this context is "rozstrzelali ich wszystkich" or "uśmiercili ich wszystkich" but definitely not "wykonał je wszystkie".
Clifton Black from Odum Georgia in the United States was attached to Tzar Nicholas's army . He use to talk about his time in Russia
I love this Russian history just watch whole entire history of russia
It's just amazing the quality of the video, a great channel of historical data.
Amazing video (timely too)! That being said I would pay TOP dollar for WWII….Someday!? Keep up the great work!
Please. You won't pay anything.
They say their patrons on Patreon actually get a vote on what gets covered, so you could actually try that. Wouldn't have to pay top dollar, just some dollars.
Now that was quiet frankly expertly explained, ain't it amazing how there is actual video footage of some war in like 1914?, how is this possible, ha.
Very interesting and very well done! I learned so much!
"As long as human labor power, and, consequently, life itself, remain articles of sale and purchase, of exploitation and robbery, the principle of the “sacredness of human life” remains a shameful lie, uttered with the object of keeping the oppressed slaves in their chains"
- Leon Trotsky
It's fake name. He's reall name is Laiba Bronshtein
@Blackberi Bart A lot of Bolsheviks took on a pseudonym to avoid prosecution by the Czarist police
I don’t know how, but i fallow this channel since day one. I’m so proud 🥲 of them!! The best history channel on You Tube!
I also like this channel, having watched all of its videos. History much better presented than in many of the mainstream history movies
Wonder what would have happened if the provisional government stopped Russia's involvement in the war
@Tecumseh What
Germans wanted Finland, the Baltic states, Poland, Ukraine and Belarus in return for peace. Kerensky being a politician was worried about losing popular support, Lenin on the other hand had no such compulsions.
Actually you need to learn more about Brest-Litovsk peace talks. Initial demands were just about lands occupied by German army ( Poland, Baltics up to Riga, and part of Belarus), but Trotsky denied this demands, so German army did push deep into Russia and increase demands significantly. Petersburg was in German reach, so Bolsheviks had no choice but to sign any peace treaty. Kerensky on the other hand had Russian army kinda alive, so he could trade a bit.
that, more land reform, and maybe the Soviet taking control from the Duma probably would've lead to a more democratic Russia.
EPIC HISTORY is a revolution . THANKS for providing this masterpiece...
Much love for the Russian people they have a fascinating history! 👍🏻
Спасибо
Can you make a series explaining Russia's history from the end of world war 1 to world war 2?
I suggest reformatting your timeline by making the markers for years more prominent and the markers for event dates less so. I thought Rasputin's death was in 1917 with it being under the numerals 1917, on going back for a second look, it was placed in 1916. But it didn't look that way in my initial impression.
But overall, extremely well done video!
Part of me feels bad for the Tsar and his family. They were so used to their blissful ignorance and riches until they were thrown into a whole new world. As deserved as some think their ending was, I still feel sympathetic for them. Well, I guess their deaths would be better than the famines that would follow.
Keep up the great work 👌
I am of the opinion that Germans are closer to Russians than British and French. Every single time in history when Russia turned towards B & F the state got lost. Katherine the Second gained the greatest achivements for Russian Impire desipte the fact she was German by birth.
Please 🙏 everyone share this onto your social media platforms. These deserve it
Currently reading, always with honor by Peytr Wrangel (English edition, of course) I just wanted to do a quick refresher on my Russian history. I knew I could rely on you guys.
Great video as always!
I have to give respect and thanks to this channel, the narrator everyone involved. With the current events unfolding Ukraine it is important people of the west educated to understand the full spectrum of things...
This I give thanks
The napolean documentary is amazing too
@Fred's Peaceful Life I never said Russia was the devil, it’s not the peoples fault their were lied to when Lenin said “Peace, Bread & Land”
@jeff cordova They weren't lied to. The Bolsheviks fulfilled all of their promises.
Just start up a website. If youtube takes it down, direct us to the website, cause honestly, I like the content you provide, and I'd like to see more videos like this.
You played yourself KRclip. Keep shooing us away, and you will have noone to ban eventually.
Dear author; thank you for this video...
FYI, "Petrograd Soviet" translates into English as "Petrograd Council" - that is important to know
I love history and I'd watched this story already last night, thanks
Very good 😊
Thanks for all the work you've provided for this site! Your videos are amazing to Binge watch!
So you love being lied to?
I said it back then and Ill say it again, you must do a video of the Russian civil war because I know you will make it the best and most interesting and in the same time the most simple since this civil war is a cluster of waring factions.
You might wànt to check out Red Victory by W. Bruce Lincoln.
Thank you man, just started researching on the Russian Revolution for a school project and a new version just came out. tysm. Subbed.
Superb. Wonderful images, many of which I'd never seen before. Thank you.
Your channel is truly Historic and Epic i love it
Great abbreviated history, I'm on part I, can't believe you pulled it off, will watch x2 before move on, thank you, JMc
the ultimate answer to the old question: "what happens to a monarchy when the heir is an idiot?"
Nicholas truly was an idiot. Could you imagine the shame that he must have felt the day when he abdicated?
The way Nicholas is depicted in this movie is radiculous and unhistorical.
The narrative that he is an idiot is Bolshevik's propaganda. His contemporaries described him as a curious and very gentle person.
FUN FACT: "One of those who cooked for Rasputin during the Great War was a chef at Petrograd's luxurious Astoria Hotel who went on, after the Revolution, to cook for Lenin and Stalin. He was Spiridon Putin, grandfather of President Vladimir Putin." Simon Montefiore, "The Romanovs", Vintage Books, 2016, footnote, page 600.
Great documentary as always
Omitted here is what originally started the 1905 revolution, which itself participated to the Triple Entente, the Russian involvement in WWI and the 1917 revolutions: the disastrous defeat and humiliation of the Russian army - considered the strongest in the world at the time - against the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese war. In Russia, you cannot lose a war and stay in power for long.
That was covered in the previous video.
9:28 Just a significant remark, these shots aren't documetry, they're from mentioned movie by Eisenstein or a movie by Evreinov. In reality there were less people, who stormed the palace
Charles gove narrating is history documentaries equivalent of david attenborough on wildlife documentaries completely adds to the viewing enjoyment
Real interesting history thank you.
Everything the History Channel should be
Epic history lives up to its title
I love epic history TV
Toby at 10.09 do you have a source for that quote? I looked all over when I first watched this and no joy. Great job on this. I think it's fair to say that the Russian revolution is the most important moment in history given how it shaped the 20th century and beyond
Not the primary source but it’s common in the secondary sources. Sheila Fitzpatrick’s book may have the primary in the footnotes.. www.poetryfoundation.org/harriet-books/2015/05/akhmatovas-requiem-in-the-age-of-terror
@Epic History TV cheers mate 👍
Most important moment in history? Its not even the most important revolution.
@TheFieldEmperor definetaly the most important moment in 20th century. Shit like cold war and ww2 prolly wouldnt exist.
@ScaryClouds so, you think Hitler started the war Because of the USSR? 🤦♂️
Great work !!
Great video guys!
Id love to see this continue and cover the Soviet Union
What's happening right now in Russia reflects the events of history of one hundred years ago.
Thanks for this!
EPIC HISTORY , YOU ARE MY FAV ❤️
Very well put together
Just found this channel wow great stuff
Quite enlightening!
Clifton Black from Odum Georgia in the United States was attached to Tzar Nicholas 's army
1:39 has to be Nikolay's beard at its absolute best. The moustache is awesome 😂
Out of all the historical channels like these, you have chosen the best narrator by far. Other channels I won't name can sound like a small kid trying too hard to sound deep and authoritative, and sounds cringe.
I hope we'll see the Russian Civil War treated Epic History style!
your subs vs views on this vid vs interaction/comments is quite the oddball...
i'v seen other creators vids @ 60k with a lot of likes and 2k comments/way more interaction
..... i dont get whats going on here (this vid)
oh well, i love epichistory tv and i hope you guys never stop.. cover WW2 in autistic detail, then do vietnam
I love the music you use for your videos. Really sets the tone. Would you guys ever consider videos like the:
American Revolution
French revolution
History of Germany
WW2 (only because I think you guys would do it way better than all the others)
Cold War
Thanks! Yup, a few of those are on the shortlist..
@Epic History TV It would be interesting to have a separate video about Rasputin, this was a really mystical person.
You are the best history channel
History is going to remember the wold wars as one war the same way we see the war of the roses (or a better comparison)
Careful epic history. Dont say anything that could upset the overlords. We wouldnt want to get demonetized would we?
Hey 😇 i just wanted to suggest you a topic on " History Of Byzantine Empire " . I wanted to know about it . Can you please make a video on it ??
With Russia being in the news lately with their current war with Ukraine, I curious if Epic History TV at some point will cover the Russian Civil War and the rest of Russian history from 1917 to present day.
Waiting for the new episodes! 👍I am from Russia
I enjoyed the video! Thanks
Wow! 1979 revolution in Iran is the carbon copy of Bolshevik revolution, almost the same sequence of events. Amazing!!!
Except for the rather significant difference that the Bolsheviks were attempting to effect triumph of the modernist theory of Marxism while the victors of the Iranian revolution were attempting to effect the triumph of the principles of Islam, a thousand year-old religion.
@mark kozlowski if by modern you mean most recent of course there’s 1300 years of difference but if you mean progressive or advanced, No Marxism is not modern. I meant similarities in sequence of the post revolution events not the ideology.
@Gator Hawk I meant modern in the sense that, with the exception of liberalism, no secular ideology has influenced our contemporary world more than Marxism. Regards.
Yeah, yeah... gliding the surface of the events, focusing on incidental similarities, failing to capture the relevant.
Such an approach to historical events always reminds me of that quote from The Lord of the Rings: "A love of learning (other than genealogical lore) was far from general among them..."
Alternative title: "Nicholas straight up doesn't have a good time."
this channel's narrator is the best I've heard
Great vid, great channel.
🌹🌹🌹 .
I like this video 👍👍👍 .
Sometimes said things and Truely happened events are different . How the " Ears " & the " Eyes " having 4 fingers distance .... !! Hearing things are Always added .... and the seeing things are happening infront of our eyes !!
🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳 🙏🙏🙏 💐💐💐
I wish I could've met Rasputin
Awaiting for the next great uploads.
Excellent!
Clear and distinct narrative.

You know this video is better than my history lecturer under the payroll of USD5,000 per month.

Great video as always. I'd be really interested in countries history
Excellent!
History repeats itself.
Right now , as we speak.

Amazing work
My mothers side of the family came from Poland, ive heard 80% of Poland came from Russia is this true? My grandmother had black hair well into her 70's i was 8 so it seemed like magic,my sister found out she did not dye it
Poland was part of Russian Empire before it collapsed.
