This is the story of the Decembrist revolt of 1825, in which a group of army officers tried to change the course of Russian history by overturning the country's traditional systems of autocratic government and serfdom. In St.Petersburg, the chaos of the interregnum following Emperor Alexander's death was exploited by the Decembrists, who attempted to launch a military coup. While in Ukraine, the Decembrists' Southern Society planned its own military revolt. This video follows the course of both risings, the aftermath, and how future Russian reformers and revolutionaries viewed the Decembrist revolt.

How joyful the condemned and exiled were, and how unhappy the survivors were. After 30 years, it became clear that happiness is not in Siberia and not in Petersburg, but in the spirit of people..."

      Mussa Aliyev ๋…„ ์ „ +91

@Command_Unit even more importantly he was an admirer of human character. His novels always impressed me by how deep the characters were: personal growth, habits, feelings, lines... It's so easy to spot 2 or 3 his characters in our family or in friend's society. It's almost like Tolstoy knew every person in the world to build characters with such preciseness. He knew people very well and how he refers to heroes of December just tells us how big of a character they had. To doubt the "Godness" of the Tsar is already unique, but to stick to it, plan a coup, become a victim of your own thoughts, be sent to Siberia and after all that never doubt but be more convinced in your ideas and ideals..!

There is famous saying: โ€œHe who is not a rรฉpublicain at twenty compels one to
doubt the generosity of his heart; but he who, after thirty, persists, compels one to doubt the soundness of his mind.โ€ Anselme Polycarpe Batbie (19th century academic jurist). Sometimes this quote people give to Cherchill.
Decembrists were naive and romantic fools without any chance to success. The sad situation is that previous Emperor didn't touch them, he waited and hoped for years that they'd grow up and stop their game of republic/democracy. Maybe he respected them for their deeds on the frontlines of Napoleonic wars and didn't want to harm them brutaly. But they used his death as a sign to guide their romantic game to a bloodbath end. A bunch of young men lined up three elite regiments in front of cannon muzzles like skittles. Even new emperor Nicolas waited them for the half of the day to go home and even sent famous and popular people to talk to them, but they killed negotiators. And all of that for beautyfull but empty words they wrote in constitutions.

Russia has an amazing history. read about the mysterious death of Emperor Alexander the First. there are versions that he did not die in 1825. much later, a poor old man appeared in Siberia. according to memoirs Local aristocrats, this elder knew the smallest details of the members of the imperial family. He was very poorly dressed, but knew several languages, excellent manners and education. So this is Russia's greatest mystery of the 19th century. I write Russian using Google translate

I have been interested in Russian history a lot recently especially sense I am half Russian myself and I am deeply saddened what my other home country could have been if not for the soviets thank you so much for making these videos. On a final note the Russian movie "Union of Salvation" from 2019 is an absolutely terrible and lying movie it has some okay scenes for example the realistic depiction of grapeshot but otherwise it absolutely lies in its history telling and to any of those wondering you can go watch a review by "Badcomedian" he makes reviews of bad Russian movies including the "Union of Salvation"

On a further note, Russia wouldโ€™ve been different had the radicals not assassinate Alexander II. Because of his assassination, his successor consigned Russiaโ€™s fate backwards, and sealing its fate towards Bolshevism. Alexander III thought that the liberalism that Alexander II promoted (and the upcoming constitution plans) caused his demise.

I agree with your opinion, Alexander III did roll back all of Alexander II reform's and did it more for self preservation rather then for stability of Russia since it satisfied the nobles for retaining power over the people it definitely caused huge discontent among the people.

It looks really good, but the scenario is pathetic. All heroes are poorly narrated, you can't understand their motives (because they are not shown), many of them have like 2-5 seconds of total screentime, and logic of heroes actions is totally absent. Furthemore, the film is sponsored by governement, so it has modern Russia's officials bias as a core: "Don't revolt - it causes blood. The tsar/president/governement will do everything for you. Just sit, remain silent and miserable"

Dostoyevsky, once a liberal himself in his youth, after a mock execution and tsar's pardon that had a profound impact on him, came to become a staunch nationalist and a loyalist, vehemently despising everything liberal and western-oriented. So his negative characters with "rebellious souls" are likely influenced by his revulsion towards liberals and rebels. That's why they are usually portrayed as being somehow inherently "wicked", because for him that must be the seed of "evil" upon which the western liberalism and rebellion grows in one's soul. A person is weak and tormented, can't defeat his sins of egoism and disgust towards the unperfect world, and thus, empowering himself through transforming them into ideas of "rights", and daringly lashes out against the world, commiting ever more sins and bringing only more misery. Instead of just accepting unjust and unperfect world (the tyranny and traditional values), like a good and patient christian. Because it's God's (supreme power's) decision of how the world must be, not a mere selfish individual's.

Freedom is a nebulous term, the Soviets claimed they made Russian more free, the French revolutionaries would have claimed the same, they certainly didn't respect the freedom of the average man to be left to himself but then these sorts of things are usually an expression of minority interests and sold as people's will after the fact to drown out the people who were fine with how things were or angry at things being made worse under the name of progress.

Someone needs to make a TV series on HBO or by BBC about this. Absolute and incredible stuff! Reminds me of Valkyrie. It's actually a really sad story of heroism. If the Northern Society won then Russian would've been better off than it is today and without the bloodshed of the 1917-23 Russian Revolution. Those men were brave but as General Beck says in Valkyrie... "Remember, this is a military operation. Nothing ever goes according as planned." Maybe if the Southern Society won there would be a divided Russia which would lead to Civil War. Who knows? Makes me want to play Napoleon: Total War again as Russia and change history. A constitutional monarchist Russia makes the most sense. It is the best system of government to date.

"In honoring Herzen, we clearly see three generations, three classes active in the Russian revolution. First - the nobles and landowners, the Decembrists and Herzen. The circle of these revolutionaries is narrow. They are terribly far from the people. But their work is not lost. The Decembrists woke up Herzen. Herzen launched a revolutionary agitation.
It was picked up, expanded, strengthened, tempered by the raznochintsy revolutionaries, starting with Chernyshevsky and ending with the heroes of Narodnaya Volya. The circle of fighters became wider, their connection with the people was closer. โ€œYoung navigators of the future storm,โ€ Herzen called them. But it wasn't the storm itself.
The storm is the movement of the masses themselves. The proletariat, the only fully revolutionary class, rose at the head of them and for the first time raised millions of peasants to open revolutionary struggle. The first onslaught of the storm was in 1905. The next one begins to grow before our eyes.
Honoring Herzen, the proletariat learns from his example the great significance of revolutionary theory; - learns to understand that selfless devotion to the revolution and turning to the people with revolutionary preaching does not disappear even when whole decades separate the sowing from the harvest; - learns to determine the role of different classes in the Russian and international revolution. Enriched with these lessons, the proletariat will fight its way to a free alliance with the socialist workers of all countries, crushing that reptile, the tsarist monarchy, against which Herzen was the first to raise the great banner of struggle by addressing the masses with the free Russian word." (c) V. I. Lenin
    "In memory of Herzen"
